The Declaration
The Gas-Free Cities Declaration
Our cities are on the frontline of the climate and energy crises. We have a responsibility to protect our residents from rising temperatures, extreme weather, and increasing energy costs.
Fossil gas is a major driver of the climate crisis and a source of pollution and price volatility. Reducing our dependence on fossil gas and transitioning to renewable energy solutions furthermore strengthen our cities’ energy security, local economies, and public health.
To align our cities’ policies with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the need for a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels, we commit to accelerating the transition away from fossil gas and toward efficient, renewable, and affordable energy systems.
We will:
- Set a city-wide phase-out date for fossil gas and take action to start the transition.
- Prioritise the deployment of renewable energies for municipal power and heat production, increase energy efficiency, electrification, and gas-free solutions for heating and cooking in people’s homes.
- Collaborate with other cities to advocate for ambitious action at regional, national, and international levels to accelerate a just and fully funded energy transition.
Together, cities can lead the phase-out of fossil gas and deliver healthier, safer, and more affordable communities. By acting now, we will build a clean, resilient, and fossil-free future for all.

The Gas-Free Cities Declaration is not legally binding. By signing it, mayors and city officials send a strong political signal that they are committed to taking action to end their cities’ dependence on fossil gas.
By signing, cities join a growing network of like-minded cities working to end their dependence on fossil gas. They get access to shared knowledge, tools and peer support to make the transition faster and easier. Together, signatories advocate for stronger action at regional, national and EU level. And they get recognised for their leadership, putting them on the map as cities that are building a better future for their residents.
By signing the Gas-Free Cities Declaration, cities become part of a network of leaders committed to accelerating the energy transition. Signatories are invited to participate in exchanges, events and activities designed to share practical experiences, insights, and best practices on how cities can phase out fossil gas and advance renewable energy solutions.
